What’s The Difference Between A Laptop, Notebook, And Ultrabook?

laptop, notebook
We are living in the age, where we have become so dependent on our computers. Now the portable computers have replaced the conventional desktops. Portable computers arrived when people needed to get their work done on the go.

With so many new gadgets being introduced in the market these days, many people are not aware about the differences between laptop, ultra books, and notebooks. Not all portable computers are called as laptops these days.

We usually choose between desktops and laptops. However, with advanced technology every product has new names and their specifications differ greatly. Let us see the differences.

Considering the size and portability features these are fair enough from small to large –

  • Palmtop
  • Net book
  • Ultra book
  • Notebook
  • Laptop

These small devices give full computing experience. Initially, palmtops used to run on low powered windows version called windows CE but slowly later they could run on windows XP. With advanced smart phones in range, palmtops went obsolete and are hardly found now. They had a screen of 6 to 7 inches.

Net books

Before iPad took in, net books of 9 or 10 inches were quite popular. One could have had a complete computing experience with these net books and their tactile keyboard. All windows applications could be easily used on them unlike the smart phones. Recently they are becoming less popular but you can still purchase them for daily computing. Intensive applications or gaming is not possible with these.

Ultra books

This can be called an ultra portable notebook. They usually weigh less than 1.5 kg and are very thin. Their screen sizes rival general notebooks ranging 11 to 15 inch. You can experience instant booting instead of lengthy ones. They are lighter, silent and faster but equally expensive. They are set with SSD drives but not DVD drives. They can be used for computing and light gaming but not 3D gaming.

Notebooks and Laptops

Laptops came as a replacement for desktops that could be carried anywhere and could sit on your lap. Similarly, notebooks were smaller than laptops. This could be carried anywhere. However, these days both these terms are used interchangeably.

Notebooks can be defined separately with their high prices. They catch the entire bit. They are available in varying sizes of 12 to 18 inches. You can even choose powerful notebooks that have powerful graphics for 3D gaming. They usually have large hard disks and DVD drives but if they do not have they may be called ultra books. Notebooks have most desktop features. You can even get internal peripherals of notebooks customized.

Convergence is a word that accounts for confusion between laptops and notebooks and also latest ultra books. All these do not have any perfect definition from the manufacturer but they can be the way you think.

Laptops are little heavier than the notebooks as notebooks are above net books. Slowly with advance technology as laptops are becoming lighter and notebooks are gaining features, both terms are becoming interchangeable.

Ultra books for Future

Ultra books are defined with special Intel specifications. Therefore, expectations in the future are slim, sexy and even lighter weight products. Also, long battery life is an additional advantage. However, they may not have optical drive, but products that have optical drives are exceptional.
